Sent by Zhou Yu to win his brother with the tale of Boyi and Shuqi, who starved together rather than separate - and comes back converted in reverse: 'I came to persuade him and lo! It is I who is being talked over.' His loyalty to Sun Quan survives; the family reunion does not.

Warns that Zhang Liao is full of guile and will be ready for the night raid - the caution Sun Quan's grief overrides, at Taishi Ci's cost.

The shuttle hostage-envoy: weeps out his staged grief at Chengdu, carries Liu Bei's three-territory letter to Jingzhou — where Guan Yu draws a sword on him ('this sword is pitiless!') — and sails home twice-empty-handed to a master who calls it all his brother's trick.

Zhuge Jin; sent to Jingzhou to propose a marriage between Sun Quan's son and Guan Yu's daughter - Guan Yu refuses with the famous line 'My tiger daughter shall not be wed to a dog's whelp'; the insult turns Sun Quan to war.

Enters Maicheng under truce to offer Guan Yu restoration and his family's safety — and takes the jade-and-bamboo refusal, Guan Ping's half-drawn sword, and a shamed walk back to report: 'he is indeed a loyal servant,' says Sun Quan.

Zhuge Jin; sent again as Wu peace envoy to Liu Bei; turned away.

Offers everything short of Sun Quan's head — Lady Sun returned, the turncoats bound, Jingzhou restored, alliance against the usurper — and is sent home to tell his master to wash his neck. His return vindicates Sun Quan's faith against Zhang Zhao's prediction: 'our friendship has something of the divine in it.'

Breaks Cao Zhen's siege of Nanjun from within while Lu Xun strikes from without.

Given Jiangling to garrison against Sima Yi's column — the holding assignment that lets Lu Xun commit everything else to Shiding.

Zhuge Ke's father and the butt of the donkey joke: Sun Quan, noticing his long face at a banquet, had a donkey led in and chalked 'My friend Zhuge Jin' on it to general laughter, and the six-year-old saved him by adding two words. His eldest son is made Left Companion of the Heir Apparent.

Paired with Lu Xun for the Miankou and Jiangxia camps and the attack on Xiangyang, the middle prong of Wu's three-front entry into the war.

Commands the Wu marine camp at Lake Chaohu and loses it in a night: Zhang Qiu's fire parties and Man Chong's attack from the eastern bank destroy 'all the ships together with much grain and many weapons', and he takes the survivors to Miankou. Then the hot-weather sickness sets in, he writes asking to be sent home, and rides to Lu Xun's camp in alarm when the reply is only 'I will decide' and the report comes back of officers playing at arrow-throwing. Fits out his ships as the visible half of the deception that covers the retreat.

Named in passing only, and long dead, but quoted for the chapter's other prophecy: 'When Zhuge Jin lived, he saw his son's ability display prominently, and he often sighed, saying, "This son will not safeguard the family."' The whole household is put to the sword in the market place a paragraph earlier.
