Rides overland with a hundred archers to behead the wind-caller - finds only fluttering flags and guards: 'he has just gone down.' On the bank he talks his comrade out of the hopeless chase: Zhuge Liang is too clever, and the boatman is the hero of Dangyang.

Feigns defeat to draw Niu Jin's five hundred into the encirclement, and later drags the bolt-struck Zhou Yu from under Niu Jin's rush at the risk of his own life.

Shares the roadblock camp and the humiliation - 'we are but men of lowly rank; we dare not dispute with Lady Sun' - and stands aside.

'We shall need the utmost freedom of movement, so throw off your armor, leave your helmets, cast aside your long spears, and reject your heavy halberds. Short swords are the weapons for today.' Hu Zun counts a hundred men to a ship, decides there is nothing to be alarmed at, and goes back to his feast. A cluster of bombs, and Ding Feng is over the bank and into the camp. He kills Han Zong himself, catching at the halberd he has grabbed from the tent door and stabbing him in the breast; catches Huan Jia's spear under his arm, throws his sword after him into the shoulder, and runs him through. The floating bridge gives way under the rout. He is also the one who later proposes Xincheng as the target — 'Wei depends on Xincheng for the defense of its passes.'

Sun Xiu's instrument, and the chapter's title says so. Called in as 'an able and trustworthy officer' when the arsenals report comes, he answers 'Have no anxiety. I will find some way of ridding the state of this evil', and supplies the whole design: wait for the winter court when every officer is assembled, spread a great banquet, invite Sun Chen, and be ready. Wei Miao and Shi Shuo handle the outside, Zhang Bu the inside.

Given the fifty thousand and two assistants, he sends the commanders with twenty thousand to Mianzhu and takes thirty thousand toward Shouchun himself, so that Wei has to look two ways at once. The relief never arrives in time, but in this chapter it is still on the road.

Ordered to set up several hundred garrisons along the river banks when the news of Shu's fall reaches Wu — the veteran of the Dongxing snow charge spending his last appearances on fortification.

Dies in this chapter, though the text does not say of old age - only that 'By this time Wu had lost by death both Ding Feng and Lu Kang'. Before that he is made Commander of the Right and Left Armies at Sun Hao's accession, and he is the man Sun Hao names when reviewing the defences he inherited: 'over all these was set Ding Feng'.
