Chapter 98
— Pursuing The Shu Army, Wang Shuang Meets His Death; Raiding Chencang, Zhuge Liang Scores A Victory.
Zhang Liao's son, made Leader of the Van with Yue Chen as his second and posted in the outermost Wei camp. Sets watchers on the tower for the signal blaze, takes Ma Dai's fire for it, throws open his gates and rides for the Shu camp - which is empty. Fights his way back through Hu Ban and Wu Yi only to be met by arrows 'flying thick as locusts' from his own camp, which Guan Xing and Zhang Bao have taken in his absence.

Chapter 100
— Raiding A Camp, The Shu Soldiers Defeat Cao Zhen; Contesting Array Battles, Zhuge Liang Shames Sima Yi.
Leads the attempt on the Eight Arrays. Sent in first of the three, thirty horsemen each, through the Gate of Birth with orders to turn southwest and come out at the Gate of Annihilation; finds a wall of troops instead, is driven back by arrows, loses his bearings among gates that multiply 'as if gathering clouds and rolling mists', and is seized and bound. Sent back to Sima Yi on foot, without arms or armour and with his face inked.

Chapter 102
— Sima Yi Occupies The Banks Of River Wei; Zhuge Liang Constructs Mechanical Bullocks And Horses.
Does two jobs. Posted with Yue Chen and two thousand bowmen on the north bank by the floating bridges, where their arrows kill Hu Ban and take the whole raft flotilla. Then sent with five hundred men by by-roads into the Xie Valley to let a wooden-ox convoy pass and snatch four or five animals off its tail — the theft Zhuge Liang wanted him to make.

— In Gourd Valley, Sima Yi Is Trapped; In Wuzhang Hills, Zhuge Liang Invokes The Stars.
He and Yue Chen are the reserve that saves the Wei command: they are the force Sima Yi and his sons run into as they break out of the burning Gourd Valley, 'and so were once more safe'.

— Suffering Defeat, Gongsun Yuan Meets His Death; Pretending Illness, Sima Yi Deceives Cao Shuang.
One of the five commanders — with Hu Zun, Xiahou Ba, Xiahou Wei and Yue Chen — who close on Gongsun Yuan and his son three miles outside the south gate of Xiangping and leave them no room to ride.
