Destroyed by his own confidence. Cao Pi had made him General Who Establishes Strong Arms, Lord of Pingyang, Governor of Xincheng and Commander of Shangyong and Jincheng; under Cao Rui the jealousy of the court leaves him no peace, so he opens a correspondence through Li Yan proposing to raise Xincheng, Jincheng and Shangyong against Luoyang while Zhuge Liang takes Changan. Reads Zhuge Liang's warning to guard against everyone and laughs it off — 'They say Zhuge Liang leaves nothing to chance. This proves it' — answering that Wancheng is four hundred miles off and a memorial and reply would take a month. Zhuge Liang throws the letter on the ground and stamps: 'Meng Da is a dead man!' The leak was never Shen Yi's doing in the first instance — it came from his own confidential subordinate Li Gu and his nephew Deng Xian, who confessed the plot for an amnesty. He wounds Xu Huang fatally from the wall, then opens his gates to what he takes for his fellow conspirators arriving to help, is met with 'Rebel, stay!', and is overtaken on an exhausted horse and slain. His head is exposed, and Cao Rui has the body displayed in the Luoyang market.

Named in passing only, and long dead, as the measure of the Shangyong siege that Chen Qun holds up against the Xiangping one: eight points of attack, eight days, and Meng Da taken. The comparison is the hinge of the chapter's argument about when to hurry a siege and when not to.
