Cao Mao dies. The chapter's iconic act of last-resort defiance. Driven beyond endurance by Sima Zhao's insolence ('Sima Zhao's heart - known to every passer-by'), gathers a few hundred palace retainers and rides out himself with a sword to attack the Sima compound. Cheng Ji and Jia Chong's men stop him; Cheng Ji spears him from his chariot in cold blood. The emperor murdered in his own palace courtyard. Sima Zhao publicly disclaims responsibility - executes Cheng Ji's three clans for the act; the deed stands.
