Guan Lu

The Supernatural Boy of Pingyuan, biography and all — the buried-corpses headache cure, the three sealed boxes, the stolen cow, the plowboy granted ninety-nine years from the Dippers' ledger. For Cao Cao he diagnoses the illness as sorcery, riddles the future ('the yellow boar meets the tiger; it causes the loss of one limb'), calls Lu Su's death and the western invasion before the messengers arrive, and warns of fire in Xuchang in the spring — the warning that keeps Cao Cao home and, twice proven, earns rewards he refuses.

Vindicated in absentia — at the news from Dingjun, Cao Cao finally reads the riddle: three-and-eight cross, the yellow boar meets the tiger, a loss below Dingjun ('Army Halt'). He sends for the soothsayer, but no one knows where he is.

Summoned from Pingyuan by He Yan to discuss the Book of Changes, he answers the request for a fortune with a lecture: Gao Kai and Gao Yuan aided King Shun, Duke Zhou assisted the young Emperor Cheng, 'all these were kindly and modest and enjoyed great happiness', whereas 'those who esteem you are few and those who fear you, many'. The blue flies of the dream gather to foul objects; the lofty fears a fall. Walks out on being called senile, and tells his alarmed uncle why he is not afraid: 'I have been talking to two dead men.'

Named in passing, but the chapter goes out of its way to close his account: 'it is to be noted that He Yan and Deng Yang met the unhappy end that Guan Lu had foretold for them', followed by eight lines of verse on the seer who 'could see events to come / As clear as those of former ages'.
