Yu Quan

Appointed Rear Guard of Sun Chen's seventy thousand, one of the six officers named to the relief of Zhuge Dan.

Dies in this chapter, and the chapter is named after it: 'Rescuing Shouchun, Yu Quan Dies Nobly'. He proposes the plan that gets a relief force through the deliberately-open south gate, goes in himself, and is still inside when the city falls. Wang Ji finds him at the west gate and calls on him to yield; the answer is the chapter's title: 'Where is the principle for yielding when I have my orders to rescue the city and so far have not succeeded?' He throws off his helmet — 'The happiest death a man can die is on the battlefield!' — and fights until he goes down under many wounds. The poem gives him the whole verse: 'Wu had produced its heroes, / Yet none were faithful to the death like Yu Quan.'
