Chair of the Secretariat, and the author of the strategy that shapes the rest of the war. Opens the chapter proposing that Wei stop trying to conquer Shu and simply hold: the Xie Valley is a hundred and fifty miles of rock and cave, Nanzheng 'a natural hell' by Cao Cao's own account, and stripping the west invites Wu in from the east. Divide the army among the generals, garrison the strategic points, train, and let Shu and Wu ruin each other. Sima Yi's endorsement is two words — 'Chairman Sun Zu says well' — and Cao Rui adopts it whole.
  • Chapter 106 — Suffering Defeat, Gongsun Yuan Meets His Death; Pretending Illness, Sima Yi Deceives Cao Shuang.
