Sima Yi sees through it before he is admitted. Li Sheng gets deafness ('Ah, Bingzhou is in the north; you will have to be very careful there'), a request for paper and a pen, broth spilled down the old man's dress, and a dying request to look after his sons — and carries it all back to Cao Shuang, who says 'If the old man died, I should not be the one to grieve.'

The man whose report on the sickbed convinced Cao Shuang there was nothing to fear rides out of the city with him and is arrested with him; Zhang Dang names him among the five, he confesses to the third-month rising, and he dies in the collar.
