Xiahou Dun; arrives with his cousin Xiahou Yuan and a thousand trained soldiers each, becoming part of Cao Cao's personal staff.

Duels Lü Bu at the Yingyang rearguard action, and next dawn spears Xu Rong dead when the governor fords the river after the fleeing Cao Cao - avenging the ambush.

Discovers Dian Wei chasing a tiger across a stream and presents him to Cao Cao. In the vengeance campaign he is a Van Leader: kills Bian Rang on the march at Cao Cao's order and duels Cao Bao until a hurricane of dust and pebbles breaks up the field.

Rides out to back Yue Jing against Zang Ba and crosses spears with Zhang Liao - until Lü Bu himself charges and both must flee.

First ambush company on the left at Cangting and half of the final roadblock that makes Yuan Shao groan aloud; in the south his flanking army takes Runan behind Liu Bei's back - the stroke that collapses the whole campaign.

Heads the delegation urging a pre-emptive strike on contumacious Liaodong - and is told, smiling, to wait a few days for the two heads to arrive by post.

Stakes his own head on taking Liu Bei and 'that Zhuge Liang of no account' prisoner - then walks the script written for him: mocks the 'dogs and sheep' vanguard, chases Zhao Zilong's feigned retreats past every warning, and is engulfed when the reeds around the narrow road become a sea of fire. He leads the battered remains back toward Xuchang.

Presents himself at the capital in bonds craving death for Bowang - loosed, he blames Zhuge Liang's fire, is reminded a veteran should have known better, and marches again as co-commander of the third division.
