He builds great timber rafts loaded with straw effigies in armour and floats them down; the Wu defenders take them for troops and run, and the rafts drag the hammers and chains away with them. Then he lays torches many fathoms long and very thick, of straw soaked in linseed oil, on the rafts — 'When the raft was checked by a chain, the torches were lighted and the chains exposed to the heat till they melted and broke asunder. Thus the rafts went down stream conquering wherever they came.' Takes Shidou when Zhang Xiang opens the gates for him, receives the surrender at Jianye, and is made General Who Upholds the State.
