His remonstrance is the chapter's whole catalogue of portents, and it costs him his head. A dog in red clothes and a turban walking like a man on a roof; a child boiled to death in a cooking pan; a cave by the market place throwing up 'a large, fleshy body completely human save that it lacked limbs', which swords could not cut and arrows could not pierce, and the soothsayers' reading of it — 'Incomplete shape, silent mouth: A state is near destruction.' Executed in the public place with Jia Fan, and honoured posthumously by the man he warned about.
