Appears in 3 chapters:
  • Chapter 60 — Zhang Song Turns The Table On Yang Xiu; Pang Tong Proposes The Occupation Of Shu.
Liu Zhang's emissary turned kingmaker: snubbed by Cao Cao, he recites the 'New Book' from memory to prove it plagiarized, catalogues Cao Cao's defeats to his face, and takes his beating; then defects on the road home — handing Liu Bei the map of Shu from his sleeve and naming Fa Zheng and Meng Da as inside men. Back in Yizhou he talks Liu Zhang into the invitation, and his secret letter urging Liu Zhang's assassination reaches Pang Tong at Fucheng.
  • Chapter 62 — The Taking Of River Fu Pass, Yang Huai and Gao Pei Perish; The Siege Of Luocheng, Huang Zhong and Wei Yan Rival.
Exposed and executed this chapter: hearing Liu Bei is 'returning to Jingzhou', he writes urging immediate attack ('remember that I am your ally on the inside') — drops the letter during his brother Zhang Su's visit, and Liu Zhang beheads him with his whole household in the market place.
  • Chapter 63 — Zhuge Liang Mourns For Pang Tong; Zhang Fei Releases Yan Yan.
Dead — but his sleeve-map outlives him: Fa Zheng's sketch of the two roads to Luocheng 'agreed exactly with that left by Zhang Song.'
